Airsoft Safety: What Every New Player Needs to Know

Airsoft is a safe and enjoyable sport when played responsibly. Whether you’re attending your first skirmish or setting up a target range at home, understanding the basics of airsoft safety is essential.

At HC2 Airsoft, we believe that safety comes first. Following these simple rules will help protect yourself, other players, and the future of the sport.

1. Always Wear Approved Eye Protection

Eye protection is the single most important piece of airsoft equipment.

Always wear goggles or glasses that are specifically rated for airsoft use. Standard sunglasses, workshop glasses, or fashion eyewear are not designed to withstand direct BB impacts.

Eye Protection Rules

  • Wear eye protection whenever airsoft guns are being handled or fired.
  • Never remove eye protection in an active game area.
  • Replace damaged or cracked lenses immediately.
  • Follow the safety requirements of your local airsoft site.

For younger players, full-face protection is strongly recommended.

2. Treat Every Airsoft Gun as if it is Loaded

Even when you know a replica is unloaded, get into the habit of treating it as if it could fire.

This simple rule prevents most avoidable accidents.

Safe Handling Checklist

  • Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot.
  • Never point your airsoft gun at anyone outside of a game environment.
  • Always engage the safety catch when not in use.
  • Be aware of where your muzzle is pointing at all times.

Good habits developed early will stay with you throughout your airsoft journey.

3. Clear Your Airsoft Gun After Use

Whenever you finish a game make your airsoft gun safe.

For AEGs

  1. Remove the magazine.
  2. Fire a few shots in a safe direction on semi-auto.
  3. At the end of your day make sure you Disconnect and remove the battery.
  4. Confirm no BBs remain in the chamber.

For Gas Pistols and Rifles

  1. Remove the magazine.
  2. Ensure the chamber is clear.
  3. Decock where appropriate.
  4. Store safely once checked.

Always keep eye protection on during this process.

4. Never Use Airsoft Guns in Public

Airsoft guns should only be used:

  • At insured airsoft sites.
  • On private land where you have permission.
  • In a safe environment away from public view.

Never carry or display an airsoft gun in public places !

Even brightly coloured two-tone replicas can be mistaken for real firearms. This can lead to serious consequences and may result in police intervention. Airsoft replicas should always remain out of public sight.

5. Transport Airsoft Guns Responsibly

When travelling to a game site or shop:

A secure case not only protects your equipment but also prevents unnecessary public concern.

6. Wear Appropriate Protective Equipment

While eye protection is mandatory, additional protection can make your experience more comfortable.

Recommended equipment includes:

Airsoft BBs can leave bruises and welts, so dressing appropriately helps reduce discomfort during play.

7. Store Your Equipment Safely

When you’re not using your airsoft gear:

  • Store replicas indoors.
  • Remove batteries from AEGs.
  • Remove CO₂ cartridges when applicable.
  • Keep equipment away from children and unauthorised users.
  • Store replicas in cases or secure cupboards.

Safe storage protects both your equipment and those around you.

8. Follow Site Rules at All Times

Every airsoft venue operates slightly differently.

Always pay attention during safety briefings and follow instructions from marshals and site staff.

Common site rules include:

  • Maximum FPS limits
  • Minimum engagement distances
  • Safe zone procedures
  • Pyrotechnic restrictions
  • Eye protection requirements

If you’re unsure about a rule, ask before entering the game area.
